Abstract Constructive alignment has emerged as a powerful curriculum design idea, but little is known of the extent to which the effectiveness of this idea is a function of qualitative variation. This article introduces a model of qualitative variation in constructive alignment, and uses the results from known alignment studies to test the Constructive alignment can be used for individual courses, for degree programmes, and at the institutional level, for aligning all teaching to graduate attributes. As indicated earlier, outcomes should be formulated in the domains of knowledge, skills and values/attitudes. Constructive alignment is about defining the learning outcomes and aligning them with teaching and assessment strategies (Biggs, 1999).
